It's Just a Kiss Away
Has anyone else noticed a surge in usage of The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" in film soundtracks over the last few years? Maybe it's just a case of standard probability. I've been stuck inside with The Cruel, Cruel Cold for three days now, and I've watched roughly 1,700 On Demand movies. I guess I was bound to hear it a few times.
Where I've come across it, in case you're wondering:
- Opening sequence in "The Departed"
- Sex/kidnapping scene in "Layer Cake"
- I forget which part in "The War"
I should add that in my mucus-laden opinion, "Gimme Shelter" is the best Rolling Stones song ever recorded, so I'm not complaining. Just bored out of my skull and noticing the little things.
Because it goes nicely with my currently feverish state, here's "Gimme Shelter" dubbed over the ending scene of "Taxi Driver". Though Martin Scorcese obviously loves the song and has used it in several of his movies, it wasn't originally featured in this one. Works nicely though, doesn't it? Oh, and don't watch if you're under 17. And if you do, it's only ketchup.
Although you mucus laden opinion is valid it is wrong. Paint it black was the best Rolling Stones song ever recorded. :-D

I particularly like the version from the No Security tour. It's on YouTube.

I have to agree with Bill, Paint it Black is better even if it is emo-y-er.
I feel so bad for you though! Being so sick you find mundane things like that sucks! Get better soon.

pretty cool, if a little long

It was included in the recent Rock Band video game for the xbox 360 as well. Kinda fun when you get to jam out AND play it at the same time.

No I agree with Sarah. That is the best Stones song. Sarah you might should send after some Maker's Mark or Jack Daniels Black Label and some honey. That'll knock the cold and mucus out better than anything over the counter. Maybe you should eat more. All that health food...if you aren't better in a couple days I'm sending pork and whiskey.

We here in Chapel Hill hope all is well with you ---- we still miss the Screensavers days-- its successor is such garbage that no one has seen the program for months.....We still wish that you could get back into the tech scene but we suppose that married life and interest in music has consumed that possibility---
We still wish you good luck and perhaps will see a re-birth of something like the Screensavers sometime.....
Peace--- Your fans in Chapel Hill, NC

But what's puzzling you

Sarah is definitely right... "Gimmie Shelter" is the best with "Sympathy" a close second. At least in my opinion... :)

I too think that "Sympathy for the Devil" is the best Rolling Stones song. Just to spread the musical wealth around, Grand Funk Railroad has a version of "Gimme Shelter" on the album "Grand Funk Railroad: 30 Years of Funk - 1969-1999 The Anthology". I'm sure its on other albums as well, but that's what I have. Another possible hidden gem is a Grateful Dead version of "Wild Horses". However its not on iTunes. I have it from the album "Old and In The Way" whether or not that's right, who knows.

I ran into the song recently in an episode of the new NBC show "Life" (12/3 episode "Dig a Hole"). It fit into the scene well and I've enjoyed alot of their music choices on that show in it's short history. It's a decent show to boot. Lead actor was in HBO's Band of Brothers.
Other tracks from Life that I liked enough to add:
Pictures of Matchstick Men - Camper Van Beethoven
Down Boy - Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Hello Hello I'm Back Again - Shivaree
NBC's Chuck has also had some good songs. Fresh Feeling by Eels to name one.
I'll end my free association of music with Boards of Canada's "Dayvan Cowboy" and "Peacock Tail" because they fit into the 'chill' category nicely which is my current state of mind

First time reader. I have noticed an increase in Stones songs in movies the last four or five years. Haven't seen any of the films you mentioned. I love the Stones, think "Sympathy for the Devil" is their best, though I love "Gimmee Shelter," too.

Yeah, Sarah, I like your 'outside the box' creativity - but - I gotta go with faroff & Karl on The Best Song thing - "Sympathy For The Devil" - is just way too much of a soul-search, methinks....

That song just sounds like the last 10 minutes of a movie. BTW long time aots/screensavers fan that got curious to what the ol'cast was up too. Traveling pics look awsome and make me jealous im stuck in a cube :(.

In "The War", Gimme shelter is played during the tree house fight. One of my favorite movies.
