For anyone who didn't know, Hunter S. Thompson died last week. I personally had never heard of him until he'd died. His name had appeared in some of my regular haunts (Sarah Lane's Blog and bumscorner) and they seemed to of held a high respect for th... [Read More]

World Tech Guy

Somehow I couldn't see him laying in a hospital with a bunch of tubes and crap, especially without his guns, his cigarettes, and his booze. The way he went out was somewhat predictable in my mind. So sad, though. The good die young. RIP HST!

ZenBro

Yeah - I just saw that on the morning news ... {deep sigh}

Eduardo

What a loss. No more fear and loathing....

I am REALLY glad someone else cares about this as much as I do. Not just the journalism or the movie, but the art. Glad to see you are a fan.

Craig

"When the going gets weird... the weird turn pro"

So long Doc... you mattered.

John-Paul

He was my hero.

Maybe he can find the peace in death that he couldn't find in life.

I'm glad other people care too, no one here seems to even give two shits.

The Inquisitor

What on earth did he kill himself, for, anyway?

What a waste.

Dave

It's a sad day for gonzo journalism, but all is not lost. I believe we will learn what drove the good Doctor to this point and he will continue to entertain and inspire us for many years to come. As Jack Nicholson said about HST he is "the most baffling human iceberg of our time."

Sherrie

DITTO great guy.

John-Paul

I'm about to lose it at work here, listening to my ipod and then gravedigger comes on followed by knocking on heavens door =(

nishimori

Hunter S. Thompson was a genius, its a sad day today. I cant even begin to imagine why he did what he did. Maybe he just figured something out...

Kitten

a friend of mine wonders if he found out about a disease and didn't want to go out like that. Who knows, but damn that makes me so sad.

what a lifeforce.

John-Paul

The releases said something about a hip injury, and that he was in pain, others said he "had his demons" which is obvious.

Mike

The funny thing is, I had rented Fear and Loathing on DVD Sunday evening, not knowing that Hunter had killed himself. After watching the movie I went on the net and read that he had killed himself, my wife and I just looked at eachother with this strange cosmic, WTF kind of look.
Pretty freaky.

TWS

What a downer..

RIP.

mike

Grandpa died last week
And now he’s buried in the rocks,
But everybody still talks about
How badly they were shocked.
But me, I expected it to happen,
I knew he’d lost control
When he built a fire on Main Street
And shot it full of holes.
Oh, Mama, can this really be the end,
To be stuck inside of Mobile
With the Memphis blues again.

I was watching "Where the buffalo roam" on INHD last week kinda like Mike said. Google news hit me kinda hard. I thought about the Hemingway thing listening to NPR on the way to work and this line from blade runner:

Tyrell: "The light that burns twice as bright burns half as long - and you have burned so very, very brightly, Roy. "

Trevor

The legacy of Thompson will be that he forever changed the way we look at the media and ourselves. Gonzo journalism is immortal. As is the memory of our twisted and brilliant friend.

Joey

Sad day indeed. RIP. :)

Nick

You know whats wierd though, He killed himself on Kurt Cobain's birthday at the age of 67. Kurt Cobain was born in 1967. Also he killed himself the same way Cobain did. Wierd

dielawn

why are you sad????that guy was a quack.........he was literally crazy

- “We are turning into a nation of whimpering slaves to Fear – fear of war, fear of poverty, fear of random terrorism, fear of getting down-sized or fired because of the plunging economy, fear of getting evicted for bad debts, or suddenly getting locked up in a military detention camp on vague charges of being a Terrorist sympathizer” - Hunter S. Thompson

Mel

"There goes my hero... Watch him as he goes."

There are only a few people who ever lived whose words have changed my life. The way I live and the way I think. Hunter was one.

I bet you White Rabbit was playing on the radio when he went.

Dave

Interesting sidenote....
Hunter now has 5 books in the top 50 best sellers on amazon.com

David

One of the good guys is no longer with us.

RIP, Doc.

Robin

My husband went to see Hunter in in NYC in a small club in the 80's he was 1 1/2 hours late and when he showed up he was totally drunk. It was a mess.

Anyhoo we all have mess ups - peace. Life can be sucky but as hard as it gets you can't check out early...

Death & Life is a mystery.

that guy

yea, this blog has kindof sucked lately

Jimmy

Sorry about spamming Sarah!

Brad

RIP

Lydia

Hey I dont usually come to your site, but my husband is a big screensavers fan...need I say more? I just wanted to comment about the Gene Kelly video you posted a couple weeks ago...CLASSIC!! I'm a big musical theatre guru, so I definitly appreciated it :)

Cyrus

...and his will stated that he wanted to be cremated & shot out of a cannon. Cool to the last!

jw

R.I.P. indeed. One of the sharpest and most accurate commentators on the state of politics in gov't, sports, you-name-it for the past 40 years.

Truly a sorrowful event.

Daniel

So sad, yet so true...

Deran

He was a great man, the most honest journalist I've ever seen. Why he did it I hope will come to light soon. I'm going to go batshit if people try to turn this into a hunter/cobain conspiracy.

"We Cant stop here, this is bat country!"

"The Edge... there is no honest way to explain it because the only people who really know where it is are the ones who have gone over."

DNA Cowboy

"I hate to advocate drugs, violence and insanity...but they've always worked for me"

R.I.P Gonzo, you inspired fear, loathing and respect!

Macizzle

No not gonzo, noooo! Wait a second, whats gonzo journalism?

Jesse

Hey Sarah, Check this out:

sarah responds- why would anybody want to support something so unhealthy? no thanks.

ryan

This is the sadness of American Society. You praise this man as a hero and someone who has had a profound effect on our culture. I don't deny that he is a great writer, but we are praising him for his life. His life was full of misery, drugs and being crazy. Are we praising him for killing himself? Or are we praising his work? These are two vastly different things. We as Americans praise celebrities no matter what they seem to do. It is sad for me that we raise this man up on an altar when in reality if your friend was this man, you probably would be freaked out to be near him.

The Inquisitor

I agree, that's why I said his life was a waste. Its too bad that with all that talent, he couldn't do anything productive with it, like exposing political corruption. The danger with putting yourself into the story is that you begin to lose perspective of the facts. At least he was upfront with his biases, though, and that's more than we can say of 99% of the mainstream media...

slane

Oh man, if you don't think he exposed political corruption, I encourage you to read some of his stuff more closely...

Jeff

"All energy flows according to the whims of the great magent...."
yes I was glad to see you were thinking about this. There is something about his will that makes him seem like a hero to us... to do what you want. We just all need to think about him in wonder and amazment of his life and indeed honor him.

Jesse

Whatever, Sarah, Im telling Kevin.

chad

thompson wasn't afraid to be himself, no matter the consequences. this is what vaults him one step above the rest of us, and what makes his life and work worthy of note. who cares how he died or why, what matters is how he lived.

don

The Screen Savers name going to change to 'Attack of the Show'.

WTF!! WTF!! WTF!! ------ WTF!!

I'm I reading this article correctly?

http://66.7.164.225/forum/announcement.php?f=9

Are they going to change the show name Screen Savers to wait - wait - wait - 'Attack of the Show'?

WTF is going on?

Shahrukh

Hi Sarah,
I dont know, u know or not about Skype. Its a very good telephony service. It has a very good pc to pc voice conversation feature. Calls at skype r clear and better than yahoo or msn. In my opinion. It also has a Pc to phone feature but they charge for that service. They offer a very low rates for pc to phone calls. U can check it out at :

Let's don't get political here because then Bush could be blamed for Hunter's emotional distress in this post 9/11 world, especially after we elected him again despite everything HST believed that the decent and right in the world would stand up and stop him and we would not let another freaking power elitist stuffy republic takeover of our system kill our young and spread war.

And I really had enough things to blame on Bush already without the death of my favorite author.

And referal spam on a memorial blog post about hunter thompson?! That's damn down wrong.

John-Paul

By the way I like "Attack of the Show" for some odd reason, I mean it's not technically the Screen Savers anymore, although I am suprized at amidst the re-re-birth/thinking, ah fuck it we're back to G4 again crap the network is dealing out amongst itself...

In an odd way I haven't been let down for tech content between Kevin R. and Sarah still running things mostly on air. And I like the net stuff because it reminds of Internet Tonight, then the top 10 lists and kevins P.s game stuff (although he's far from my favorite game critic) still reminds me of the missed Pluse stuff i like.

All in all though for a non-strictly tech show I'm not let down and also Sarah's DVD and movie stuff is great.

But attack of the show seems more fitting.. than the Screen Savers. I'm kinda bummed out there's no way to buy Screensaver reruns from the San Fransico days. or a DVD set or something..

Speaking of the Critirion Fear and Loathing Director approved set is great. Corespondence and essays from HST read onscreen by Johnny Depp, digital master of the original film, several documentarys about Hunter. And that is the up side to all this horrible event is that all of Thompson's books are flying off the shelf and the word is growing.

Max

Well.., in regards to a previous post about them changing the show name... Sarah's webcam says "Monday will be different, but not how you think" Is that a little weird???!!
